First called Brookville, Woodvale is coined after the pleasant natural surroundings such as woods, brooks and vales.
The name of the village had disappeared as it was consolidated by two neighbouring villages with the closing of the post office around 1948. However, in 2004 the Municipality of Clare re-introduced the name with the CMA 2004 community signage project.
