Comeauville
Almost equidistant between Yarmouth and Digby, this village was first called Clare, but later renamed for early settlers, the Comeau family, the dominant family name in the area.
The Municipality of the District of Clare has a population of 8018 persons (2016 census) residing in a large coastal and inland area of 852 km2. The municipality consists of 48 communities that are identified in the landscape by colourful blue village signs.

In French, “une concession” is a grant of land. In 1799 a concession was granted to Major François Comeau and associates, in the middle of what was then Clare.
The first settlers were Mathurin McCollough and Germain Corporon who arrived in 1829.
The village is named after the plentiful soft-shell and bar clams found in the large tidal mud flats at low tide. ‘Grosse’ is French for large and ‘coque’ means clam.
Named for William Hassett, foreman of a group of Irish lumbermen who settled by the first falls of the Sissiboo River around 1828.
The name was given by Irish settler Patrick Nowlan for Sir Henry Havelock, who distinguished himself in the Indian Mutiny in Lucknow in 1857.
Founded by Bonaventure Deveau and his wife Sophie in 1843.
